In the distance, Granada's Moorish jewel the Alhambra, seen from the district of Sacromonte. Situated in the Valley of Valparaiso through which flows the river Darro, the surroundings adorned by Mediterranean forest,  Sacromonte is a picturesque and authentic feeling place – the whitewashed facades, cacti, caves and catacombs making an interesting blend with folclore, religion, legends and relics.

Sacromonte's numerous caves - originally home to the marginalized of Granada society, are famous for still being inhabited by the locals. Their history goes back to the XIV century when created by muslim and jewis inhabitants who had been expelled from their homes in the city, later joined by gypsy nomad population - which tradition and lifestyle is now colouring each corner of the village. The most aknowledged and appreciated culural expression is without doubt las zambras, traditional gypsy flamenco shows attracting many visitors to Sacromonte in search of the authentic Andalucía.

Another destination bringing many pilgrims to the village is the collegial church la Abadía, Sacromonte's most famous monument honouring the martyr and saint Sant Cecilio. It was built in 1607 by archbishop Pedro de Castro, in order to store and protect a number of saints' relics and forged documents - los libros plúmbeos - found by treasure hunters in the 15th century.
